February almond blossom

Poetry - February Almond Blossom

Even now the smell of summer,
lavender alive with bees,
the scent of wild thyme on the wind.
The almond branches invisible
beneath a froth of blossom,
petals from palest pink to
the colour of seaside rock,
translucent butterfly wings
each open flat to the sun
displaying blood red hearts.
The breeze plucks a single bloom.
Drifting from its anchorage
it wallows in the air,
unhurried, in true Spanish style.
