I dream of flying

My dream is the colour
of gentian violets.
Bird like we swim through the air,
ethereal acrobats
arms widespread
to embrace each other.
The wind grasps our breath
and snatches hair into
wild, red streamers.
I glance at the safety net
its edges drawn into
peaks of sheer gauze.
A momentary distraction,
my connection lost.
Now drowning in air,
arms flailing,
the beautiful sky
streams past,
a death roll
towards the red sands.
The safety net welcomes me
like a shroud.

painting by Yasuo Kuniyoshi
entitled "Disturbing Dream."
