Snow Whale

Mountain, like a beached whale
black with snowy crustaceans
clinging to its back.
Ice blisters and glacial saliva
trickling down its skin,
feeding the snow plain below.

Corrugations in the surface,
like a creased paper bag.
Lines scored, white on white,
an abstract painting,
whose horizon is a smudged line,
sky echoing Arctic wastes.

A fault line splits opens the snow skin.
Cold, dead water wells up
to fill the gash
like black blood
oozing from a cut.
